Student Finance 2019/2020

The online application for student finance is now available.

In the past applying for student finance was a complicated business, but now the form can be completed online. In previous years, students have had to post an original birth certificate or valid passport with the form. To get around these requirements, representatives from the WELB have agreed to visit the school on Tuesday 9th April to validate student identities.

All students should avail of this service.

Students must bring an original birth certificate and a photocopy of the birth certificate or a valid passport and a photocopy of the passport to school on the morning of Tuesday 9th April. Students must also have the online form completed by this date or identities cannot be verified. This means that, if we are organised, no passports or birth certificates will have to be sent by post (recorded delivery – expensive) and the finance application will be sorted before Easter.

So, for the 19/20 academic year, it is expected that pupils will make an online application for their Student Finance. The student needs to create an online account at and complete the application.

Students who have an EMA number must use this number when applying for their student finance. The system will ask for their secret answer and password – they will not have this from before so they will need to ring the Student Loans Company on 0300 100 0077 and they will then issue them with a secret answer and password. They will then be able to continue with their online application.

When a student’s name is “Mc” or “O” – leave no space between the mc and the rest of the name – eg. McBride and use O’ with no space either, eg. O’Doherty – if you are on the system previously under the correct version and do it wrong now it will give a new customer reference number.

Parents or partners can also register online separately by creating an online account. Once registered, you can click on a link to ‘support a student’s application’. You will need the student's ART ID to link to their account.

A powerpoint is available on the school website (below) to help you with the process. When the pupil fully completes their application online and submits it, they should then print off a cover sheet which gives their customer reference number on it. Student Finance staff will need this cover sheet along with a copy of the pupil’s passport/birth certificate on April 9th.

Student Finance Staff must see the original passport or birth certificate. Pupils will need to have copies of their parents’ income documents (ie.P.60s etc for the 17/18 tax year) with them also as the parents will have entered their income details online or provided the details on a PFF1 form which can be downloaded from the Student FinanceNi website

The school visit from Student Finance staff will simply involve the collection of the online coversheet and corresponding identity documents and parental income documents; all of the forms will have been completed online. Representatives of Student Finance will be available to answer any specific queries in relation to individual more complex cases if necessary.

If any pupil is having difficulty with the online process and would prefer to complete a paper form these can be requested from the Student Finance office (02882 411499) or downloaded from the Student FinanceNi website. Any paper forms can be checked for accuracy on the day that Student Finance staff are at school or alternatively can be posted independently to the Student Finance office in Omagh.
