Library Mural Painting

The library mural was first commissioned by our librarian Mrs Bryce and our principal Mrs Madden, in September 2021, to make the library a brighter and more welcoming place.   The task was to create a mural design that encapsulates books that we have all read.  Year 14 Robert Doherty won the prize for the best mural design in October 2021.

The mural is made of a variety of different characters from books and references to them, including To Kill a Mockingbird, Frankenstein, Call of Cthulhu, Dungeons & Dragons, Mary Poppins and Harry Potter, all iconic stories known by many.  The first mural painters were a group of Year 11 art students and then we, the fantastic Year 10 budding artists, arrived.  The mural has been worked on for the past 13 months in the school library.

We have really enjoyed working on the mural as it gives us a chance to do art with our friends after school and have a good chat.   We value the opportunity to be able to see our work on the wall anytime we visit the library and know that it will be there for a long time.  It is also a wonderful preparation for our GCSE Art and Design course as it has given us a unique opportunity to expand our skills, build confidence and have the experience of  working on the kind of large-scale projects we might find in the creative world.  We have enjoyed being able to have a say on things we think should be included in it.  The library is a fun place to be and we love going to the Mural Painting Club every Thursday afterschool.  A special thanks to Mrs Lowth for her time and commitment to this wonderful school project.
