Sixth Form : Physics - A Level

The requirements for studying A-Level Physics at Limavady Grammar School include good GCSE passes in Physics and mathematics.  Additional Maths is useful, although not essential.  Specific mathematical requirements for the A-Level course will be taught as part of the A-Level Physics programme.

A-Level results over the last few years have been very good with an average of 70% obtaining a grade 'C' or better.

There is no doubt that where pupils have applied themselves consistently to their work over two years, good grades have been obtained.  A high grade at GCSE Level is no guarantee of a good pass at A-Level, indeed hard-working pupils with lower grades have often out-performed more able pupils who have not worked hard for their A-Levels.

There are three sets and pupils are unstreamed.  The ten periods are divided up into four periods of lecture, three periods of practical and three periods of tutorials.  Mrs Hollyhurst, Dr Floyd and Mr Ferguson are responsible for the lectures.  Mrs Hollyhurst, Dr Floyd, Mr Ferguson and Mr Smith supervise the practicals, which are run on a 'circus' basis.  Small tutorial classes are organised to sort out individual problems which have arisen during the lectures.

Assessment is an integral part of the course, with regular end-of-topic tests supplementing the normal examination process.

An increasing number of girls are opting to do A-Level Physics, and very often obtain top grades.

In common with all A-Level courses starting in September 2000 A-Level Physics will have two distinct periods of examination.  AS Physics will be sat in May of the lower sixth year.  This had three modules - two theory and one practical.  This accounts A2 Physics will be sat in May of the upper sixth year for students who have already completed their AS Physics.  Again it consists of three modules - two theory and one practical.  This again accounts for 50% of the final mark.

Pupils completing AS Physics will receive a full A-Level Certificate.

AS Level lies somewhere between GCSE and the present A-Level.

A2 Level will be at the present A-Level standard.

Pupils can complete an AS Level Physics and not proceed to a full A-Level.
