The course comprises six modules over two years:

      three to be completed by the end of the lower sixth year

      remaining three in the upper sixth year.

The pupils who completes the first three modules and is successful in the examination at the end of the lower sixth year are awarded an AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary Level).  This course and qualification provide an opportunity to broaden students' post-16 education as well as a basis for progression to the full Advanced GCE (A-Level) which is awarded after the completion of the remaining three modules and success in the examination at the end of the upper sixth year.

AS 

The AS Modules are as follows:

AS Module 1

(a) The Study of Poetry written after 1800,  and

(b) The study of 20th Century Dramatists.

      One poetry text and one drama text are required for study.

There is a two-hour open book examination on these.

AS Module 2

      The Study of Shakespeare - one Shakespeare text is required for study.

There is a one-hour closed book examination on this.

AS Module 3

      The Study of prose written before 1900.

Candidates will be expected to produce a 1500-word assignment based around a literary theme or focus  eg The Victorian Novel.

An AS Level is awarded, therefore, after the study and assessment of three texts and one written assignment at the end of the lower sixth year.

A2

A GCE A-Level is awarded on the completion of three further modules:

A2 Module 4

(a) Response to Unseen Poetry

(b) Study of Poetry written before 1770 - one poetry text is required for study.

There is a 2½ hour closed book examination on both parts of this module.

A2 Module 5

The Study of 20th Century prose - one text is required for study.

Candidates will be expected:

      either to sit an open book examination of 1 hour 10 minutes 

      or produce a 1500 word assignment based on the text.

A2 Module 6

Drama - Synoptic Assessment - a comparative study of two Drama texts chosen from a list of prescribed pairs of text.

 

There is a 2½ hour examination. A GCE Level is awarded, therefore, after the further study and assessment of four texts and an Unseen Poem.
