Sixth Form : English - A Level The study of this particular course encourages students to develop their interest in both language and literature as interconnecting and mutually supportive disciplines. This course allows students to develop as independent, confident and reflective readers and writers. The course gives a variety of opportunities to explore the relationship of language and literature through a wide range of reading opportunities, critical reading of and response to both literacy and non-literacy texts, as well as writing for a variety of audiences and purposes. Minimum requirements (at least one of): GCSE English (Grade B) GCSE English Literature (Grade B) GCSE Drama (Grade B). There are six modules required in order to obtain a full A-Level. All of these are assessed by external examination - there is no coursework element. The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) award is completed in year 13, and comprises of three units: Module 1 Language Production - 1 hour 15 minutes - 30% of total AS or 15% of total A-Level. Production of a piece of writing for a specific audience based on unseen material, along with a commentary. Module 2 Poetic Study [open book] - 1 hour 15 minutes - 30% of total AS or 15% of total A-Level. One poetry studied from a range offered in the specification. Module 3 The Study of Language - 1 hour 30 minutes - 40% of total AS or 20% of total A-Level. One prose text chosen from a range offered in the specification. Modules 1-3 will be examined at the end of year 13. The A2 award is completed in year 14, and also comprises of three units: Module 4 Comparative Literary Studies [open book] - 1 hour 30 minutes - 15% of total A-Level. Two texts studied in comparison, from a range offered in the specification. Module 5 Texts and Audience [closed book] - 2 hours 15 minutes - 15% of total A-Level One pre-1770 text from a range offered in the specification and a comparative study of unseen material. Module 6 Language in Context - 2 hours 30 minutes - 20% of total A-Level. An unseen comparative response to at least three texts and an evaluation of same. Modules 4-6 will be completed at the end of year 14. |
