The A-Level Biology specification aims to sustain and develop an enjoyment of, and interest in Biology. As Biology influences our everyday lives in many ways, the course includes a study of its application in such areas as agriculture, medicine, and biotechnology.

Biology A-level is divided into two parts:

The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) award is completed in year 13 and covers three different modules:

AS 1 - Molecules and Cells - 1½ hours written
AS 2 - Organisms and Biodiversity - 1½ hours written
AS 3 - Assessment of Practical Skills - Internal Assessment

The A2 award is completed in Year 14 and includes:

A2 1 - Physiology and Ecosystems - 2 hours written
A2 2 - Biochemistry, Genetics and Evolutionary Trends - 2 hours written
A2 3 - Assessment of Investigational and Practical Skills - Internal Assessment

Entry Requirements

• Grade B in Biology GCSE or at least AA grades at Double Award GCSE or the
equivalent.

• Those who have achieved BB will be admitted if they have achieved 65% or more in
the Biology component of Double Award or the equivalent.

• All others achieving BB will be considered in rank order of achievement in Biology
and at the discretion of the Head of Department.
