The Course

A vocational award designed to provide a broad educational basis for further education or for moving into employment within the leisure and tourism sector.

The specification consists of four compulsory units.  Three units are internally-assessed through production of portfolios, and one is externally assessed by a written test.

The GCSE course is structured as follows:

Unit 1: Introduction to Leisure and Tourism. Written examination paper lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. This paper has short structured questions and may include resource materials, diagrams, etc. Weighting is 40%

Unit 2: Customer Service in the Leisure and Tourism Industry. Controlled Assessment where we set the tasks and students submit a portfolio. Weighting is 20%

Unit 3: Marketing in the Leisure and Tourism Industry. Controlled Assessment where we set the tasks and students submit a portfolio. Weighting is 20%

Unit 4: Leisure and Tourism Destinations. Controlled Assessment where we set the tasks and students submit a portfolio. Weighting is 20%

Aims

Provide a broad background of understanding and core knowledge of the leisure and tourism industries in the UK.

Provide opportunities for progression into employment in the Leisure and Tourism industries or higher level vocational qualifications on these or related section.

Encourage a candidate centred approach to learning together with the opportunity to apply knowledge of the Leisure and Tourism industries in a vocationally relevant way.

Foster cross sector themes and approaches so that candidates can gain insight into related sectors, such as business, retail and distribution, and hospitality and catering.

Prerequisites:

  • Basis proficiency in Literacy.
  • Basic proficiency in Numeracy.
  • Motivation to Work Independently.
  • Computer Literacy.

Please note: Leisure and Tourism will NOT be offered as an AS/A Level
