The Course

The aim of learning one or more languages to GCSE Level is to build on existing knowledge with the emphasis on using languages for practical communication.  Pupils will develop understanding of spoken and written forms of a language in a range of contexts.  They will develop the ability to communicate effectively in a modern language in both speech and writing, develop their knowledge and understanding of grammar and gain a greater insight into the culture and civilisation of the country concerned.

Pupils will be assessed across four skill areas:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

By the end of the course, pupils should be able to handle a range of practical situations in a foreign language, such as shopping, eating out, using public transport, going to the doctor and asking for directions.  They should also be able to give and ask for information about themselves, their family, their interests, their home area and future plans, amongst other topics.

There are opportunities to visit both France, Germany and Spain through our school exchange programme.

We would strongly encourage pupils with an aptitude for languages and who have enjoyed their experience of language learning in the junior school to consider opting for two languages at GCSE level.

All pupils will study at least one Modern Language.
