Home Economics

Year 11 Year 12

Home Economics involves the study of nutrition, food choice, diet and health within the context of the home and family.  It encourages, knowledge, understanding, ability to think critically, decision-making, management of resources and development of practical food skills.  This enable students to lead effective lives as individuals and family members as well as members of the wider community.

Aims

To stimulate and sustain an interest and enjoyment of the subject so students take pride in their achievements. 

Develop practical skills associated with home economics activities.

Increase the use of information and communication technology. 

Develop knowledge and skills required for effective management of resources.

There are two tiers of entry:

Foundation

Higher

Assessment

Assessment consists of one examination paper (either 1 ½ hours or 2 hours) - 50% and one piece of coursework - 50%.  The coursework task has two aspects:

Part A - research based activities

Part B - practical food preparation activities.

The coursework task will be completed in Year 12.

GCSE Home Economics builds on the context studied at Key Stage 3 and provides a suitable basis for further study at AS and Advanced GCE.
