Theme C: Ecosystems

This theme concentrates on the characteristics of ecosystems and the links between them.  It focuses on peatlands and sand dunes in Northern Ireland at the small scale, and Tropical Grasslands and Tropical Rain Forests at the regional scale.

Theme D: Population and Resources

This theme concentrates on population distribution, structure, and growth.  It examines how growth of population has put increased pressure on natural resources which creates complex problems which cannot be readily solved.

Theme E: Economic Change and Development

This theme deals with economic change in both the developed and developing world.  It examines the factors affecting the location of industry.  It provides an opportunity to examine both environmental and developmental issues.

Theme F: Settlement

This theme concentrates on the situation and location of settlements, their distribution within a landscape and their internal structure.  Settlements are dynamic features of the environment which grow and decay through processes such as urbanisation and counter-urbanisation.  Planning has a major impact on settlements.

All candidates must undertake an investigational study.  This investigation is undertaken as a group activity but a personal report must be completed by each candidate.
