Year 11 Year 12

The course is divided into sections, which do not carry equal marks, but lead to a full grade at GCSE.

Living Organisms and Life Processes - 40 %

This is about the main systems of the Human Body and the corresponding systems in Plants.

Environment

This is concerned with the relationships between plants and animals in a habitat, and includes practical fieldwork.  Aspects of pollution of the environment, both local and international, and man's role in conservation are studied.

Variation

This includes a study of Genetics, leading to how variation occurs in organisms and the role of variation in Evolution.  Modern developments, like Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology are also included in this part of the course.

Microbiology - 35 %

The role of some useful and harmful micro-organisms.  How the growth of these micro-organisms is controlled inside and outside the body.

Coursework - 25 %

This is used to develop their investigative skills.

1.         Planning.

2.         Carrying out.

Interpreting - practical investigations.
